Hey there lovely people. I hope this Easter break has brought you nothing but rejuvenation. I hope all your family members are doing well too!
I thought I'd just stop by and give a quick update on what's been going on. I haven't been very active on here as of late and a few weeks ago, decided I needed a break.
My mental health hasn't been the greatest recently. I decided to take some time away from Tumblr as the anons I was receiving were too nasty, too cruel and overall too much for me to handle on a daily basis.
I'd recently had to make some really difficult choices to step away from friendships that were no longer viable, despite best efforts being made to salvage what remained.
While grieving the loss of one friendship, I was informed that an ex-client and dear friend of mine, took her own life. This really set me back and I have very much struggled to come to terms with her death. In our sessions she would often vocalise how beneficial and imperative our sessions were to her mental health plan. When I quit and moved to another facility, I wasn’t sure if she would find another trainer that could help her the same way.
She never did: her mother reached out to me to express that there was nothing more I could have done for her daughter, but she wanted me to know.
Not only has my mental health been very unstable, so has my physical health. Last Monday I had yet another ovarian cyst rupture. I am right back where I started in looking for treatment, management and more information about what is going on. The public holidays have set my test/scan results back a few days but I am on the waiting list to see a specialist about the possibility of having my ovaries removed if this will be something I have to endure each month.
My body feels weak, I’m constantly fatigued, my appetite is barely there. With migraines, nausea and constant pelvic pain, it's hard to brave work right now with a smile and a positive attitude.
Bailey has also been dealing with some back pain/inflammation around his L5 and S1 vertebrae. So between the two of us, we are probably two halves of one whole healthy human.

After cancelling twice, I got my Pap smear. I was so anxious, I started to cry as I was putting the robe on. The PA was so great, talked me through every single step as she was doing it. The “spreader” moment was terrible and I burst into tears, she grabbed a smaller one and while still hard, that was better.
The most important thing is how much she validated me. She said I am very, very tiny and understood why intercourse was not an option. She recommended a pelvic floor specialist to see if I have any options. Then I got some blood work done as well, a recommendation for a colonoscopy and a mammogram.
I mean at this point I probably won’t follow up with that pelvic floor idea: I might, but today I’m just so relieved it’s over and I’m proud of myself for taking this step. A lot of Americans don’t have health care and it’s a slap in their face to not use mine for preventative health.

wait... not being able to kneel without extreme pain is a disability thing? i've always been told i was just fat and needed to lose weight then this wouldn't happen anymore 😭
Movement restrictions are never "just fat." Unless the case is, quite literally, that the fat prevents the motion - which due to the way fat zones vs joints works, pretty much only happens at the waist - there is some form of underlying issue.
That said... Why are you separating "fat" and "disability"? To be disabled is simply a statement that you can't do something the way a better-abled person can. It says nothing about the cause. Fat can be a contributing factor to disability (it sure doesn't help my back problems!), it's just rarely the cause in and of itself. "I can't kneel" is a disability, regardless of the cause.
In my case, the inability to kneel is at the confluence of a couple of factors. The first is that I have what I'm pretty sure is a congenital pelvic deformation, potentially a congenital femur deformation, which prevents me from sitting with my knees together in any position. (You can also tell when I'm standing because I stand with my feet in a V, rather than parallel. Neither of these things is typical.) Add that to the autism superpower "hypersensitivity to pain," particularly knobby/no-fat-cushion knees, and yes, the amount of weight involved, and you have a position that's at most mildly uncomfortable to the average person but legitimately painful for me. I Cannot Kneel.
All of that said... Anon, I promise you that I am not saying this to be unkind. But you know that there is not actually a way to lose meaningful weight and be a healthy person, right? There is no diet nor exercise routine nor miracle pill nor surgery that can provide that to you. Weight loss works in a five year span in under 1% of cases, and those cases are all people who are dedicated enough to starving themselves (which is a serious health issue) to do it. A doctor who tells you that weight loss is possible and a goal you should hope to achieve is, at best, willfully ignorant on the subject. If inability to kneel specifically affects your quality of life, then I'd advise you to work with a physical therapist on it. NOT a doctor. A physical therapist is the specialist you go to for "hey my body does not move in the way I want it to move, can we do anything about that?" They're the ones who are going to be able to help you find alternatives that suit your body.

Snap back
Make a cup of tea or coffee because this is a long one :)
The other day, I was watching the YouTube channel of a couple I follow. They just welcomed a baby, and the latest vlog was the woman showing her 3 weeks postpartum body, which looked unbelievably great, and for some reason, I felt a little uncomfortable while watching.
I asked myself, "why?" as I thought back to all the similar vlogs I’ve viewed. I think the postpartum vlogs that make me uncomfortable are the ones where the woman seems to be having a quick “snap back.”
“But why?” I asked myself, again. Then it dawned on me. Most of the women I know didn't recover as quickly as some of the women I see in vlogs and on social media. I think this notion and perpetuation of "snapping back" is detrimental to women, especially while they’re in such a vulnerable state, having just given birth.
In this particular vlog, the woman mentioned (multiple times) how she still needs to lose weight, criticized and pointed out areas of her body, including her stomach, even though her body was recovering, remarkably. This blew my mind because I was thinking "Oh my goodness, you grew a baby in your uterus, of course it’s still swollen! You just brought life into the world! Stop!!”
In my sensitive opinion, I think the conversation around postpartum should not be focused on a mother’s body and how fast she is, “snapping back” and I don’t think women should offer up their postpartum bodies for debate. These “snap back” vlogs and social media posts can cause women to be subjected to unfair comparisons by their partner, causing feelings of inadequacy and stress. Comparison shouldn’t happen, but I can guarantee it does.
Instead, the focus should be on mothers receiving an abundance of support from their partners and the trusted people around them in caring for a new baby, eating well, getting ample rest, feeling ease and calm, feeling confident in expressing the status of their mental and emotional health, and overall feeling extra taken care of.
I understand that for some women, the healing process happens nicely, and they feel good enough to exercise as soon as they're cleared by the doctor, and they're in a good space. I also understand that many women who give birth for the first time have been shocked to find out that 6 weeks is not entirely accurate for how long it can take a woman to heal because the dominant narrative is the quick “snap back.”
I'm so thankful and appreciative that more mothers are sharing their childbirth and postpartum journey and showing how different it can look from what we see on social media. Showing that it can be a long way down the road before you feel comfortable in your body again, or before that favorite outfit fits the way it used to.
Additionally, I’m grateful to all the women who are bringing to the forefront, important conversations about healing after having a baby. As someone who has yet to give birth, I want to know as much as I can about the process, keeping in mind that each woman’s experience is unique to her. Something that I’m surprised to only have recently found out is that before a woman even thinks about any sort of working out, she should first take care to strengthen her core and pelvic floor, and only after that, begin working out again.
Hearing and seeing different narratives are so important, because for example, I had no idea that Pelvic Floor Specialists existed until a couple of years ago. I also had no clue that so many women experience Diastasis Recti and when that is the case, they should absolutely not do any typical ab workouts because it will make it worse and most definitely cause setbacks and issues. Working with a Pelvic Floor Specialist is the appropriate procedure.
I’m quite stunned that the medical community does not do women justice regarding postpartum. Why aren’t all mothers given a proper exam to determine if she has Diastasis Recti? Why aren’t all mothers referred to a Pelvic Floor Specialist as a place to start after they’ve been cleared for movement? I’m not sure if insurance would even cover the cost of the specialist.
If men were the ones to give birth, the postpartum period would be 6 months, not weeks and every sort of specialist would be offered up to them, along with insurance covering it all!
Not only is 6 weeks an inefficient and unreasonable amount of time, in my opinion, for a woman to heal– it’s definitely not enough time for a mother to even begin thinking about losing weight or “snapping back.” I would imagine, she just wants to be able to sit and stand without being in pain.
The last point I would like to make, is that I don’t think men truly know how painful and traumatic childbirth and postpartum healing is. Even though more women are sharing about the realities of childbirth and the aftermath, I think so many more don’t share because their journey doesn’t look like what we see on YouTube and social media.
Not enough women are talking about how terrible it feels (I can only imagine) to have swollen and painful private parts, a swollen uterus, hurting when peeing, bleeding a river up to 6 weeks, in some cases, pain during breastfeeding and experiencing issues like Diastasis Recti. Now add on top of that, being expected to perfectly care for your baby, knowing exactly what to do at all times, enduring sleepless nights with little help in some cases, leaking milk and standing in a body that you don't feel comfortable in and can hardly recognize. Then add even more on top of that, being the main person your baby clings to for survival and support and fighting unhealthy thoughts about how your body looks like or what it will look like weeks and months down the line. Imagine how mentally and emotionally taxing it is to love your child and at the same time not like what carrying and birthing your child has done to your body. It’s A LOT!
Welcoming a baby into the world will always be a heavier burden on the mother and just straight-up unfair to her in so many ways. The “snap back” narrative just adds more unreasonableness and should be done away with!

soo I’ve got my two year-post-cancer surgery check up tomorrow. if it goes well then they’ll discharge me and i will only need to be seen if i have any bleeding or unexplained pelvic symptoms, i guess.
i really want to ask for HRT as it’s maybe my last opportunity to get my surgeon to write a letter for my file about it, and my GP won’t let me have it without that. there’s even a specialist menopause clinic at my hospital that i could try and get a referral to. in the past he’s always been like “that’s something we can discuss at X point in the future” And now this is truly the last time. I’m not great at remembering to advocate for myself when faced with doctors and I’m worried i won’t manage to.
It does frustrate me that i have to try and get it sorted like this because why am I not allowed to make my own choices about hrt… when I’ve asked him about the various substantial risks of other health problems that being in surgical menopause from age 31 without HRT give me he’s just like, don’t focus on that, focus on losing weight. Like, sorry!!!!!!! But i will focus on this actually!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m an adult capable of making my own choices, why is my future dependent on this one medical professional who sometimes says he’ll give it to me next time and then when next time rolls around he forgets all about it. i just… i want HRT.

March is Endometriosis Awareness month.
After six surgeries for endometriosis, I have been left with a lifelong pelvic pain condition. I see my GP every month; my pelvic physiotherapist every three weeks; and my pain specialist every six months. I also have had to seek mental health treatment as a result of this condition.
I do not get to take a day off from the medications and treatment exercises I do at home. Any stress at all increases my level of pain to the point of being incapacitated, as I have been yesterday and today. This condition desperately needs early and effective intervention to help other endometriosis patients avoid my fate.

I've had so many pelvic ultrasounds (almost one a year for the past 15 years) due to my pelvic pain and period symptoms over the years and the only thing that ever shows up is an occasional cyst.
My doctor recommended against a laparoscopy because there has never been anything to imply endometriosis.
I am not sure if it would change anything if it turns out I have it but in a way that doesn't show up on ultrasounds.
Any recommendations for what to ask my doctor next? What to research? I feel so powerless because the best I've managed in 15 years on any given birth control is about 6 months of feeling better before it takes a sharp nose dive again, and I get pretty strong side effects from most birth control so swapping sucks really bad.
To be fair, it is nearly impossible to diagnose endometriosis WITHOUT surgery. Nobody ever suggested it to me, I had no idea what it even was, until the OBGYN who did my surgery said “wow that’s one of the worst cases of endometriosis I’ve ever seen.” My surgery was to remove a cyst, we had no idea my organs would be glued together with endometriosis adhesions. Laparoscopy might be necessary for you to determine if there is endometriosis. A surgery to remove the tissue will help (birth control should keep it mostly under control, but it can grow back. I’ve heard some women go periodically to get their insides scraped out.) I’d highly suggest pushing your doctor for it, maybe even finding a new doctor or specialist who will do it. This is the only thing that will remove the pain.
Honestly I so get you about the birth control. It works for a bit and then seems to wean off. Or makes you even more sick! I switched to the depo shot a few years ago and it is the LEAST amount of pain I have been in for YEARS. I personally have very little symptoms with the depo, but I know that isn’t true for everyone. I know swapping sucks but I feel like you’ll eventually find one that works well with your body specifically. I know there’s more medications to try like a cocktail: metformin, spironolactone, mounjaro, and ozempic to name a few. I haven’t tried these yet but it’s my next step! I’ve also taken lots of vitamin supplements to help with symptoms like anemia, fatigue, and inflammation. I take things like B12, fiber supplements, probiotics, and vitamin D. Have you tried pelvic floor therapy? I had a wonderful physical therapist I saw for years, who gave me tons of resources and tips and ideas. Things like a tens machine, pelvic floor yoga, mental health tools, a list of medications to try, doctor referrals, etc. I would highly recommend getting a connection like that, especially if they have endo and can really understand your pain. Even just having someone to talk to with your shared experiences and pain is such a relief. It’s so nice for someone to just listen and understand.
I’ve read many articles online (even the good ones all have opposing advice, so take it all with a grain of salt), and I’ve bought a few books (there’s tons on Amazon!). I can’t say there’s one thing that has been all correct. Even now I am still learning. Unfortunately endo is just under researched and misunderstood. These are two books I have that I’ve taken some things into consideration. There’s tons of more books I’d like to get my hands on though.
